After months of endless cold weather spent hibernating in our jeans, we are relishing in the long-awaited arrival of spring sunshine. We've shed our winter coats in favor of spring jackets, our sunglasses have once again been restored to handbag essentials-status, and we've even braved going sock-free in our ballet flats.

We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves, though, and admittedly, it's still not quite warm enough yet to wear our dresses and skirts sans knee-high boots. That morning chill still requires our legs to be fully covered. So, if you're as bored with denim as we are and desperate to break out of a daily outfit rotation that centers around your true blues, you're in the right place.

This season, there's a new spring trend replacing your jeans: cargo pants.

By no means is this new on the fashion scene. But for 2026 there's a distinct design difference. Cargos now have more of a tailored take with a put-together and polished feel that can be dressed up or down.

They still have multiple, oversized pockets in a predominently neutral color palette. Think varying shades of tan, brown and green. However, materials range from cotton and linen to satin and even leather styles. As for the shape, wide-leg iterations are undoubtedly the easiest to wear, but trend-led barrel and balloon leg silhouettes also feature, offering plenty of choice in finding the right cargo pants for you.

The most important thing is what you wear your cargo pants with. Crucially, the aesthetic veers more towards smart than casual. Heels instantly dress things up, but you can't go wrong with a button-down shirt or a blazer.

The key is balance: limit yourself to one relaxed item, whether it’s a T-shirt or flip flops, with smarter pieces comprising the rest of your ensemble and you'll have nailed the look. Or, try monochrome dressing (wearing one color head-to-toe) to instantly look effortlessly elegant.
